The Asheville shopping scene is diverse, ranging from shopping malls with national chain stores to quaint downtowns. Browsing interesting shops can be a very romantic way to spend an afternoon. Here are the favorite areas for shopping:

Downtown Asheville has seen a great revival in the last ten years. Today the bustling area features 200+ locally owned stores, 30-some galleries featuring local and international art and craft, and quite a few antique shops. Biltmore Village, located at the entrance of Biltmore Estate, has 50 quaint shops and galleries in early 1900s buildings and houses.

Tunnel Road is the major commercial strip (exits 6 and 7 on I-240) with several shopping centers and a beautiful 120+ store enclosed shopping mall, Asheville Mall.

West Asheville is home to many local, funky shops, boutiques and galleries.

Browse local shops for plenty of unique items in the quaint downtowns of nearby small towns such as Hendersonville, Black Mountain, Brevard, and Waynesville.

Grove Arcade Asheville Grove Arcade Public Market
After a very long restoration, Asheville's public market recently reopened with 50 specialty shops (all locally owned), restaurants, and sidewalk vending with fresh food and crafts. This block-long building has an interior "mall" and shops around the entire exterior.

Asheville Shopping Brunks Brunk Auctions
About every eight weeks or so, one of the finest auctions of fine antiques in the Southeast is held in Asheville. Recent auctions have included 18th- and 19th-century tapestries, Arts and Crafts objects, pottery, Southern furniture, architectural pieces, and jewelry. There is no fee to attend.

Asheville shops Malaprop's Bookstore & Café
Consistently voted as one of the best bookstores in the Southeast. Beware, you may end up spending much more time there than you planned with poetry readings, a fun coffee shop, and great people watching.

Wall Street: From custom sandals to clothing from Ireland, you will find a cute avenue of trendy shops, galleries and restaurants. If walking, the best place to enter Wall Street is via Battery Park Avenue near the intersection of Haywood Street.

Antique Shopping: There are a dozen antique shops downtown, and most are on Lexington Avenue and Walnut Street, including Asheville Antiques Mall on Lexington . Don't miss Stuf Antiques at 52 Broadway. Captains Bookshelf has a wonderful collection of used and rare books, including first editions, at 31 Page Avenue across from the Grove Arcade. Not Your Average Antiques, also across from the Grove Arcade has Americana at it's best with vintage slots, phonographs, toys, posters, jewelry, guitars, folk art and a lot more. Our favorite place to rummage for antiques is Antique Tobacco Barn, 70,000 square feet warehouse packed with finished and unfinished antiques. Biltmore Antiques District comprises 13 stores within a mile and a half of the Biltmore Estate. Along All Souls Crescent road near the entrance to the Estate, visit Fireside Antiques, Biltmore Lamp & Shade Gallery and The Gardener’s Cottage for antique furniture, lamps, vintage jewelry and garden ornaments. Along Swannanoa River Road, find the 9,000-square-foot Bryant Antiques mall and Oddfellows European Antiques Warehouse. The ScreenDoor and the Sweeten Creek Antiques & Collectibles (31,000 square feet) are located on the eastern end of the district. Village Antiques, on the north side, features fine European and American antique furniture and art.
